Lesson Opening: Exploring Flat Shapes

Objective

Kick off a fun and engaging mathematics lesson focused on flat shapes for Reception/Kindergarten students.

Introduction: Shape Treasure Hunt

Materials Needed:

Set the Scene

Begin your lesson by gathering the children in a circle on the classroom carpet. Show them the colorful treasure chest and explain that inside are treasures related to shapes.

Engaging Question

Ask the children: "What do you think is inside our treasure chest today?"
Encourage them to share their ideas. This will engage their imaginations and get them excited for the lesson.

The Treasure Reveal

  1. Shape Discovery:
Open the treasure chest to reveal a variety of flat shape cutouts. Hold each shape up one at a time, introducing them to the students.

    • Circle: “This is a circle! Can anyone find something round in our classroom?”
    • Square: “Here’s a square! Look, it's just like our classroom windows!”
    • Triangle: “This triangle has three sides! Can you think of anything that has a triangle shape?”
    • Rectangle: “And here’s a rectangle! It looks like our books! Can you find anything else that looks like this shape?”
  2. Movement Activity:
After discussing each shape, play some fun background music. Ask the children to dance around the room and when the music stops, they should freeze next to an object that matches one of the shapes. This movement will help them physically connect to the shapes around them.

  3. Discussion:
Once the music stops, have students point out their chosen objects and explain which shape it represents. This activity promotes recognition and reinforces vocabulary in a playful manner.

Closing the Introduction

After everyone has shared their shapes, remind the class that today, they will learn more about flat shapes through exciting activities and fun stories!

Transition to Activity

With their curiosity piqued, say, “Let’s jump into our shape adventures and find out more about these fun flat shapes!”

By starting the lesson with a treasure hunt that includes movement and group participation, you’ll capture the children's attention and set a lively tone for the rest of the math lesson on flat shapes!
