Introduction: What’s the Plan?

Hello, Year 1! Are you ready to embark on an exciting mathematical adventure today? We are going to explore the wonderful world of numbers with a fun and active game that will help us learn about counting, addition, and subtraction!

The Magic Bean Game

Objective:

By the end of the lesson, you will be able to count numbers, add them together, and even take some away!

Materials Needed:

• A basket or a box (to collect our 'magic beans')
• 20 small soft balls or bean bags (you can decorate them to look like magic beans!)
• Number cards from 1 to 10

Let’s Start!

1. Warm-Up Activity: Counting Our Beans

   • Gather in a circle.
   • I will pass around the basket, and each of you will take turns picking a 'magic bean' (one soft ball) from the basket.
   • As you take your turn, shout out the number of beans you have in your hand.

2. Adding Up the Beans

   • Once everyone has had a turn, let’s put all the magic beans in the centre.
   • We will count together how many beans we have. Can anyone guess how many we have in total?
   • Now, let’s pretend we are at a magical market! We are going to ‘buy’ and ‘sell’ our beans. If one friend takes 2 beans away, how many do we have left? Let’s work it out together!

3. Making it a Challenge:

   • Now, I will show you some number cards. You will work in pairs to create your own number sentences using the beans.
   • For example, if you have 4 beans and your friend gives you 3 more, how many beans do you have now? Write it down!

Conclusion:

To wrap up our adventure, let’s sit in a circle again. Each of you will share one thing you learned about numbers today. Remember, maths is not just about numbers; it’s about using our imagination too!
