To engage Year 2 students with the concept of place value in a fun and interactive way.
1. Begin with a Story: Gather the students in a circle and say, "Today, we are going on a treasure hunt! But this treasure is hidden in the Mystery Box. Inside, there are some special objects that will help us discover the secrets of numbers!"
2. The Mystery Box Revelation: Show the decorated Mystery Box and invite students to guess what could be inside. After a few guesses, open the box to reveal a collection of objects.
Example of Objects: 25 buttons, 14 building blocks, and 7 toy cars.
As students express their guesses, introduce the idea of place value by saying, "In mathematics, we like to group numbers in tens and ones to understand them better, just like counting our treasures!"
Grouping the Objects:
Discussion:
End by stating, "Today, we have not only found some hidden treasures but also learned how to use groups of tens and ones to understand the exciting world of place value!"
Transition into the main lesson by asking, "Who is ready to dive deeper into place value and unlock even more treasures in numbers?"
