To engage Year 4 students in the concept of addition through an interactive and fun activity that captures their curiosity.
Hello, everyone! Today, we’re going to dive into the exciting world of addition, but with a twist! I have a Mystery Box right here. Inside this box, there are several hidden objects that represent numbers. Are you ready to uncover the mystery? Let's find out what they are and how we can use them to practice our addition skills.
Before we reveal what’s inside, here’s how it works:
Engage the Class: Gather the students in a circle around the Mystery Box. Show them the box and ask them to guess what might be inside. Let them brainstorm numbers or items that could relate to addition.
Reveal and Add: As you pull out each object, announce its number and have the students repeat the number after you. Write each number on the board.
Class Discussion: After you have about 3-5 numbers on the board, ask the students how they think we can find the total. Guide them through adding the numbers using vertical addition or regrouping, depending on their current understanding.
Now, let's add them up!
Ask students to come up and physically regroup the numbers, using counters or their fingers to visualise the addition.
At the end of our activity, we will count the total number of items and write it down, celebrating how we can use addition in everyday mysteries!
Through this engaging start to our math lesson, students won’t just learn about addition—they’ll experience it! The Mystery Box will not only capture their attention but also lay the groundwork for collaborative and interactive learning. Let's get started and reveal the first mystery!
