Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greetings and Warm-Up Activity:
- Begin with a brief introduction to the topic of transition. Ask students how they feel about moving up to Year 2.
- Encourage students to share their thoughts using sticky notes. Collect these and place them in a large envelope.
Main Activity (15 minutes)
-
Story Time:
- Read a picture book about change to the class. For example, "The Kissing Hand," which deals with separation and new beginnings.
- Pause during the reading to facilitate discussions about feelings and emotions.
-
Group Discussion:
- After the story, engage the students in a discussion about what they think Year 2 will be like.
- Use chart paper to list down student responses about what they might learn or experience in Year 2.
-
Transition Day Worksheet:
- Distribute Transition Day worksheets where students can draw and write about something they are excited about for Year 2 and something they are a bit worried about.
- Allow students to share their worksheets with a partner.
Closing (10 minutes)
-
Reflective Sharing:
- Invite a few students to share their drawings and thoughts with the class.
- Discuss as a group how they can cope with feelings of worry and excitement. Emphasise that it is normal to feel a mix of emotions during transitions.
-
Conclusion:
- Reinforce that moving to Year 2 is a positive step and share that everyone in the class is feeling similar emotions.
- Collect the worksheets to review later and display the sticky notes on a 'Feelings Board’ that will be available for students to view throughout the term.
Assessment
- Observe student participation during discussions and sharing sessions.
- Review Transition Day worksheets to assess understanding and emotional expression.
Differentiation
- For students who may struggle with writing, allow them to dictate their thoughts to a teacher or use pictures to express their feelings.
- Provide additional support to EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners by encouraging peer support during discussions.
Follow-Up
- Plan a “Welcome to Year 2” event with Year 2 teachers to further ease the transition and encourage new friendships.
- Continuously revisit the 'Feelings Board' throughout the first few weeks of Year 2 to provide a space for students to express ongoing emotions about the transition.
