Lesson Plan: Introduction to Community Helpers

Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify different community helpers and their roles.
- Describe the importance of community helpers in everyday life.
- Express their thoughts about who they want to be when they grow up.
Materials Needed
- Picture cards of various community helpers (e.g., doctor, firefighter, teacher, police officer)
- Large chart paper and markers
- Paper and crayons for student drawings
- A short video about community helpers (optional)
Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin with a warm greeting and ask students if they know any community helpers.
- Show the picture cards one by one, asking students to name the helpers and their roles.
Discussion (10 minutes)
- After presenting the cards, ask guiding questions:
- What does a doctor do?
- Why is a firefighter important?
- Who helps you learn at school?
- Encourage students to share any experiences they've had with community helpers.
Activity: Drawing a Community Helper (10 minutes)
- Instruct students to choose one community helper they admire and draw a picture of that person.
- While they draw, walk around and ask students to explain their choice.
Sharing Time (5 minutes)
- Invite students to share their drawings with the class, explaining who their helper is and why they chose them.
- Display the students’ artwork on a bulletin board labeled “Our Community Helpers.”
Closing (5 minutes)
- Summarize the importance of community helpers in keeping us safe, healthy, and educated.
- Ask students to think of ways they can help in their own community, even as a 1st grader.
Assessment
- Observe student participation during discussions and sharing time.
- Collect drawings and evaluate based on creativity and understanding of the role of their chosen community helper.
Follow-Up
- Plan a field trip to local community helper workplaces (fire station, post office, etc.) or invite guest speakers to talk about their jobs.
