Introduction

Welcome to our exciting maths lesson, Year 1! Today, we are going to embark on a magical adventure right from our classroom. Get ready to explore the wonders of numbers through stories, games, and creative activities!

Starting the Adventure: The Magic Number Hat

Materials Needed

• A large, colourful hat (or a magic wizard's hat)
• Flashcards with numbers (1 to 10)
• A magic wand (it can be a painted stick or a rolled-up piece of paper!)

The Hook:

1. Wear the Magic Hat: As you enter the classroom, I will be wearing a special magic hat. The hat is magical, and it holds special numbers that we will discover together!

2. Gather in a Circle: Let’s all sit in a circle on the floor, and I will pass around the magic wand. When you receive the wand, you will get to choose a number from the magic number hat.

3. Reveal the Number: As you pull out your number card, you will have to share with us:

   • What number you found.
   • How many fingers that number equates to (for example, if you pulled out a '4', show us four fingers!).

4. Counting Together: After everyone has revealed their number, we’ll count all the numbers together. Let’s see how many fingers we can hold up as a group! This will help us practice counting and recognising our numbers in a fun way!

5. Story Time: I will then tell you a short story about a magical village where numbers come to life. Each character in the story will introduce themselves with their number and teach us something fun about it!
