Imagine you wake up one morning and decide to treat yourself to your favourite chocolate bar. As you unwrap it, have you ever thought about where all the ingredients came from? What if I told you that your chocolate bar might contain cocoa from Ghana, sugar from Brazil, and packaging made in China? This is the fascinating world of Transnational Companies (TNCs)!
To engage students in understanding the global connections created by TNCs through an interactive mapping exercise.
Set the Scene: Start by asking students to name their favourite snacks or products. Write these down on the board, and then encourage students to think about where those products might come from.
Mapping It Out: Hand out colourful sticky notes to each student, asking them to select a product and write down the key ingredients or components of that product on the note. Then, have them research (or reference a pre-selected list) to find out which countries those ingredients come from.
Place Your Sticky Notes: As students gather their findings, have them come up to the world map, place their sticky notes on the relevant countries, and draw lines to the product's origin.
Group Discussion: After all notes have been placed, lead a discussion around the following questions:
Through this interactive lesson, students will gain a visual understanding of how TNCs operate across borders, creating a vibrant and complex web of global trade. This not only highlights the significance of geography in our daily lives but also sets the stage for a deeper exploration of the advantages and challenges posed by transnational companies in future lessons.
Let's dive into the world of TNCs and discover their impact on globalization and local economies!
