Lesson Introduction: Career Exploration

Opening Activity: "The Career Guessing Game"

Objective

To engage students in thinking about different careers and to introduce the concept of career exploration in a fun and interactive way.

Materials Needed

Lesson Introduction Steps

  1. Creating Anticipation
As students enter the classroom, have the colorful cards spread out on their desks. Each card should have a unique career written on it, but students should not reveal their cards yet.

  2. Explaining the Rules
Tell the students they are going to play a game where they will try to guess who/what their career is. They will describe their career without saying its name, and their classmates will try to guess.

  3. Game Play

    • Ask each student to look at their card quietly and think about what they could say to describe that career.
    • Once everyone is ready, pick one student to start. They will give a few clues about their career. For example: "I help people when they are sick," or "I create amazing visuals and designs."
    • As soon as someone guesses the career correctly, they can ring the bell/buzzer, and then they take a turn giving clues about their own career card.
  4. Discussion
After all students have had a chance to participate, gather together for a group discussion. Ask questions like:

    • "What surprised you about the different careers?"
    • "Which careers sound interesting to you and why?"
    • "What skills do you think are important for each of the careers shared today?"
  5. Transition to the Lesson
Explain that today’s lesson will delve deeper into career exploration. You will discuss what it means to explore various career options, the importance of self-discovery in choosing future paths, and how to align personal interests with potential careers.

Reflection

Encourage students to think about their own skills, interests, and values as they look at the array of careers presented. By engaging in the "Career Guessing Game," students not only developed teamwork and communication skills, but they also piqued their curiosity about the wide range of possibilities for their futures.

This engaging introduction sets the stage for a lesson on career exploration while fostering participation and creative thinking, making it suitable for Year 6 students.
