Engaging Mathematics Lesson Starter: "Maths Scavenger Hunt"

Objective

To spark curiosity and enthusiasm for mathematics by engaging students in a creative and interactive scavenger hunt that incorporates mathematical concepts.

Introduction: The Hunt Begins!

Welcome, Year 6! Today, we're going on a Maths Scavenger Hunt! This will be a fun and exciting way to explore mathematical concepts right here in our classroom and around the school. You’ll be solving puzzles, finding clues, and using your maths skills to complete challenges!

What You'll Need

How It Works

  1. The Clue Reveal: I will hand out your first clue, which will lead you to a specific location around the classroom or school.

  2. Solve the Problem: Once you reach the location, there will be a mathematical problem or puzzle. Solve it as a team! You might need to calculate a perimeter, find fractions of numbers, or interpret a graph.

  3. Next Clue: If you solve your problem correctly, you'll receive the next clue that will lead you to another location!

  4. Teamwork: You will work in pairs or small groups to encourage teamwork and discussion. Remember to share your ideas and strategies!

Example Clue

“To find your first clue, look for the number that’s twice the smallest prime number you can find. Under that number, your first task is waiting for you!”
