Matariki Magic: A Starry Art Adventure

Introduction: What is Matariki?

Kia ora, tamariki! Today, we are going to explore a very special time in Aotearoa – it’s called Matariki, the Māori New Year. Matariki is marked by the rising of the Matariki star cluster, and it’s a time for remembering those who have passed, celebrating new beginnings, and coming together with family and friends.

Starting the Lesson: A Starry Discovery

Activity 1: Starry Story Time

  1. Gather ‘Round: Find a comfortable spot in the classroom where everyone can gather in a circle.

  2. Tell a Story: Share a brief story about Matariki that includes:

    • The significance of the Matariki stars.
    • The customs and traditions associated with Matariki, such as planting seeds for the new year, feasting together, and remembering those we've lost.
  3. Ask Questions: After the story, ask the students:

    • How do you feel when you see the stars at night?
    • What does Matariki mean to you?

Activity 2: Star Craft Creation

  1. Star Design Inspire: Invite the children to design their own star that represents their wishes for the new year. They can consider what they want to learn, what they hope for their families, or how they can be kind to one another.

  2. Materials Needed:

    • Coloured paper
    • Glitter
    • Scissors
    • Glue
    • Markers
  3. Create Together:

    • Each student will cut out star shapes and decorate them using colours and symbols that mean something special to them.
    • Encourage them to share their designs and why they chose those particular colors and patterns.

Reflection

As we create our stars, let’s remember that just like the Matariki stars bring us together, our wishes and hopes can also bring us closer. At the end of the lesson, we will display our stars in the classroom to celebrate Matariki together!
