To inspire students and introduce them to the world of drawing through an engaging and imaginative start to the lesson.
Begin the lesson by presenting a mysterious, decorated box to the class. Let the box instill curiosity around it. Ask students to think about what might be inside. This creates an initial buzz of excitement.
Once the anticipation builds, invite students to come to the front and take turns drawing an item from the box without looking. Inside the box, place various interesting objects—such as a quirky toy, a beautiful piece of fabric, or a natural item like a shell or leaf.
Teacher Note: Ensure that the objects chosen are diverse and offer interesting shapes, textures, and colors.
After selecting an object, each student will have five minutes to observe the item closely and create a quick sketch. Encourage them to focus on shapes, lines, and textures rather than perfection. Play soft music in the background to create a comfortable environment for drawing.
Once the sketches are completed, ask students to pair up and share their drawings with a partner. Encourage them to discuss what they found interesting about their object and their drawing process.
Finish this engaging introduction by facilitating a brief group discussion. Ask students:
Transition into the main content of the lesson by explaining how each drawing begins with observation, and how today’s session will further explore the fundamentals of drawing techniques, elements, and styles.
By starting the lesson in this interactive and engaging way, students are more likely to feel inspired and eager to continue learning about drawing!
