Setting the Scene: Gather the students in a circle and place the large cardboard box in the middle of the circle. Tell them that this box is magical; it can transport them anywhere in the world! Invite them to imagine what kinds of places or adventures they could go to if they could just hop inside.
Engaging Question: Ask the students, “If you could open this box and go anywhere, where would you want to go? What would you see, and who would you meet?” Allow a few moments for them to ponder and share their thoughts. Encourage enthusiasm and creativity!
Roles and Characters: Invite the students to pick out one costume piece from the box. As they put on their chosen item, they should think about what kind of character they would like to become. It could be a brave knight, a sneaky pirate, a wise wizard, or even an animal!
Creating a Scene: Once they’ve chosen their characters, ask them to create a short scene together that includes all the characters. They can use the props from the box to enhance their story. Encourage them to think about what their characters want and how they might interact with others.
Sharing Time: After a few minutes of preparation, let each group present their scene to the class. Make sure to applaud each performance to build confidence and enthusiasm for drama!
Wrap up the lesson by discussing what they enjoyed about stepping into different characters and telling stories. Highlight the importance of creativity and collaboration in drama, and remind them that, just like the box, their imaginations can take them anywhere!
By starting the lesson with an engaging and interactive activity, students will be more eager to explore the world of drama throughout the rest of the session!
