Exciting Reading Adventure!

Objective:

To engage Year 1 students in reading through a playful and interactive introduction that sparks their imagination.

Lesson Starter: "The Magical Story Hat"

Materials Needed:

Introduction (5 minutes):

  1. Gather the Class: Gather the students in a circle on the floor.

  2. Show the Hat: Bring out the large, colourful hat and show it to the class.

    • Ask the students: “What do you think this hat is for? Is it a magician's hat? A storyteller's hat?”
  3. Spark Imagination: Let the children discuss their ideas for a moment. Encourage them to use their imaginations.

  4. The Magical Story Hat: Explain that this is the "Magical Story Hat" and it has the power to take us on reading adventures.

    • Share that every time someone wears the hat, they get to choose a storybook from a special collection.

Activity (10 minutes):

  1. Story Choice: One by one, invite students to wear the Magical Story Hat.

    • When it’s their turn, they can pick a storybook and tell the class why they chose it—or they can just share what they think the story might be about based on the cover.
  2. Props Involvement: As each student shares their book choice, introduce a prop that relates to the story. For example, if a child picks a book about a dragon, present the toy dragon and ask them what they think it might do in the story.

Conclusion (5 minutes):

Wrap up by reinforcing the excitement of stories and reading.

Transition:

Kindly guide students into a reading nook where the stories are waiting for them, and let them dive into their own magical reading adventures!
