Lesson Script: Phonological Awareness

Introduction to Sounds (5 min)

"Good morning, everyone! Today, we are going to explore something really fun! We will learn about sounds, which is called phonological awareness. Phonological awareness helps us understand and play with sounds in words.

Let's start with a little warm-up! I want everyone to think of their favorite animal. When I say 'go', I want you to make the sound that animal makes! Ready? Go!"

(Wait for students to make animal sounds, encouraging them and joining in if necessary.)

"Wow! Those were amazing sounds! Can anyone tell me what sound a cow makes? And how about a dog? Great job, everyone!"

Sound Identification (5 min)

"Now that we have warmed up our voices, let's play a little game. I'm going to play some sounds, and I want you to listen carefully. When you hear the sound, raise your hand if you know what animal it is!

(Play the first audio clip.)

"Can anyone tell me what that sound was? Yes, it’s a lion! Fantastic! Let's try another one."

(Continue playing more audio clips, allowing students to identify the sounds and giving them props such as animal figures to match.)

Printable Card Activity (10 min)

"Great job with the sounds, everyone! Now it's time to do some fun work with our printable cards. I am going to hand these out to each of you.

On these cards, you will see some pictures and spaces to write the sounds you hear. I want you to fill in the sound that matches each picture. Don’t worry, I will walk around to help you if you need it!

(Distribute printable cards and monitor students while they work.)

"Remember, if you have any questions, just raise your hand! I’m here to help!"

Sharing and Collecting Cards (5 min)

"Okay, my friends, I see lots of hard work happening! Now that you've filled out your cards, I need everyone to pass their cards to the front of the classroom!

(Gather the cards or collect them randomly.)

"I'm going to take a quick look at what you've created to see how well we understand our sounds! Remember, we are not presenting them today, but I will check if you identified the sounds correctly!"

Wrap Up and Review (5 min)

"What a fun lesson we've had today! We explored sounds and played with them!

Can someone tell me one new sound they discovered? Yes, that’s right! Fantastic! You’re all doing such a terrific job with sounds!

As a little reward for participating, I have some stickers for you!

(Give out stickers to students.)

"Don’t forget, I have given you a worksheet to take home today. Practice those sounds at home, and we will chat about what you learned next time! Have a wonderful day, everyone!"
