Objective
The goal of this lesson is to introduce preschool children to the concept of "Christmas in July" through storytelling, singing, and creative activities. By the end of the lesson, children will be able to understand the idea of celebrating Christmas in the middle of the year and express their thoughts through art and music.
Materials Needed
- Christmas-themed storybook (e.g. "Bear Stays Up for Christmas")
- Christmas decorations (non-breakable ornaments, tinsel)
- Art supplies (coloured paper, glue, crayons)
- Christmas songs (e.g. "Jingle Bells" or other kid-friendly tunes)
- A small Christmas tree or a picture of one
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greeting: Welcome the children with a cheerful "Merry Christmas in July!"
- Discussion: Ask the children if they know what Christmas is and how it is celebrated in December. Encourage them to share their experiences.
- Introduce the Topic: Explain that in some places, people also celebrate Christmas in July to enjoy the cold weather similar to December.
Story Time (10 minutes)
- Read Aloud: Choose a Christmas-themed storybook.
- As you read, engage children by asking questions like, "What do you think will happen next?" or "How do you feel about Christmas in July?"
- Discussion: After the story, ask the children what their favourite part was and why. This will help develop their comprehension and conversational skills.
Activity: Craft Time (10 minutes)
- Create Christmas Cards: Provide children with coloured paper, crayons, and glue.
- Instruct them to draw and decorate a Christmas card for a family member or friend.
- Encourage them to use Christmas symbols like trees, stars, and gifts.
- Show and Tell: Allow a few children to share their cards with the class and explain what they created.
Music and Movement (5 minutes)
- Sing Christmas Songs: Teach the children a simple Christmas song like "Jingle Bells."
- Make it interactive by encouraging clapping and dancing along.
- If time allows, include actions or movements to encourage participation.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Wrap-Up Discussion: Gather the children and discuss what they enjoyed the most about "Christmas in July."
- Closing Activity: Ask each child to share one thing they would like to do to celebrate Christmas in July.
