Lesson Plan: Elements of Art
Grade Level: 7
Subject: Art
Duration: 30 Minutes
Objective
Students will be able to identify and describe the basic elements of art, including line, shape, form, color, value, texture, and space. They will also demonstrate their understanding of these elements through a creative activity.
Materials Needed
- White drawing paper
- Pencils and erasers
- Colored pencils or markers
- Rulers
- Printed handouts with definitions and examples of the elements of art
Standards
This lesson plan aligns with the National Core Arts Standards for visual arts, specifically focusing on creating, presenting, and responding to art.
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Start the lesson by asking students what they think "art" is. Encourage a brief discussion.
- Introduce the topic: "Today we are going to explore the Elements of Art, which are the building blocks used to create a work of art."
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
1. Line
- Definition: A mark made by a tool as it is moved across a surface.
- Example: Show images of different types of lines (straight, curved, thick, thin).
2. Shape
- Definition: A two-dimensional area defined by boundaries.
- Example: Highlight geometric shapes (squares, circles) and organic shapes (freeform).
3. Form
- Definition: A three-dimensional object.
- Example: Explain the difference between shape (2D) and form (3D) with models or pictures.
4. Color
- Definition: The aspect of things that is caused by differing qualities of light being reflected or emitted.
- Example: Discuss primary, secondary, and tertiary colors with a color wheel.
5. Value
- Definition: The lightness or darkness of a color.
- Example: Show a gradient scale from light to dark.
6. Texture
- Definition: The surface quality of an object, it can be real or implied.
- Example: Discuss examples of rough, smooth, soft, hard, etc.
7. Space
- Definition: The area around or between elements in a piece of art.
- Example: Discuss foreground, middle ground, and background in visual composition.
Guided Practice (10 minutes)
- Hand out the printed materials that outline the elements of art.
- In pairs, students will choose one element of art and find an example from a provided set of images. They will discuss what element they chose and why.
- Each pair will share their example with the class.
Independent Activity (10 minutes)
- Instruct students to create a simple composition on drawing paper that incorporates at least four of the elements of art discussed in class.
- Encourage them to use colored pencils or markers to add color and texture to their artwork.
- Walk around the classroom to provide guidance and feedback.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Allow a few students to share their artwork with the class.
- Recap the elements of art discussed. Ask the students how they used these elements in their own work.
- Assign a brief reflection: "How do you see the elements of art in your daily life?"
Assessment
Students will be assessed based on participation in discussions, completion of the artwork, and the reflection written at the end of the lesson.
Homework
Ask students to find a piece of artwork (either from a famous artist or their own) and identify the elements of art that they can see in it. They will share these findings during the next class.
This concludes the lesson plan on the Elements of Art. The students should leave with a foundational understanding of these concepts that will assist them in their future art studies.
