Introduction: The Mystery of the Missing Cookies

Scenario Setup

Imagine walking into a classroom to find a large jar filled with cookies placed at the front. As students take their seats, they notice a peculiar sign beside the jar stating, “The Mystery of the Missing Cookies!

Hook

“Good morning, everyone! Today, instead of starting with a typical lesson, we have a mystery to solve! Over the weekend, a cookie jar was left unattended in our classroom, and when we opened it this morning, we found that several cookies were missing. How many cookies do you think were taken? And how can we figure this out?”

Engagement Activity

  1. Initial Discussion:

    • Ask students to discuss in pairs what they think might have happened to the cookies. Encourage them to come up with wild theories and to think about how they could gather evidence to support their claims.
  2. Collecting Data:

    • Once they've shared their theories, prompt students to come up with a way to collect data. For instance, they could ask their classmates how many cookies they think were in the jar before it was opened and how many they think were eaten.
  3. Data Representation:

    • Introduce them to basic statistical methods by explaining that we'll be collecting this data on a whiteboard/chart. Ask the students to take a quick anonymous vote with sticky notes on how many cookies they believe were originally in the jar (e.g., 10, 20, 30, 40).

Transition

“Once we have our data, we can start using statistics to analyze what might have happened to those cookies! We can calculate the mean, median, and mode of our guesses. Let’s see what the data tells us about our cookie mystery!”

Objective

By the end of this lesson, students will learn how to:

This creative start not only helps hook students into the lesson but also makes statistical concepts relatable and fun!
