- Storybook containing the sight words
- Worksheet for practice
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
Begin the lesson by explaining to the students that today they will learn how to read some basic words that they will see often in books.
- Introduce 5 basic sight words (the, and, I, to, is).
- Show flashcards, one by one, and pronounce each word while having the students repeat after you.
2. Guided Reading (10 minutes)
- Read a short story that includes the sight words.
- As you read, pause when encountering a sight word to have the students read it aloud together.
- Discuss the story briefly, asking simple questions to check comprehension.
3. Group Activity (10 minutes)
- Divide the class into small groups.
- Distribute the flashcards among the groups.
- Each group will take turns saying the words on their flashcards loudly and clearly.
- After each round, ask groups to use one of the words in a simple sentence (e.g., "I see the cat.").
4. Individual Practice (5 minutes)
- Hand out a worksheet that has pictures and space for students to write sentences using the sight words.
- Students will write one sentence for each word learned in the lesson.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Ask a few students to share their sentences with the class.
- Reinforce that these sight words are important for reading.
Assessment
Observe student participation during the group activity and individual practice to assess understanding of basic words.
