Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Greeting & Roll Call: Welcome students and take attendance.
  2. Introduction to Topic: Explain what a sentence is and introduce the idea of extending sentences:
    • A simple sentence has a subject and a verb.
    • We can make our sentences more interesting by adding more words.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

  1. Simple Sentences: Write a simple sentence on the whiteboard (e.g., "The cat sleeps.").

    • Ask students what they see.
    • Discuss the subject (cat) and the verb (sleeps).
  2. Extending the Sentence:

    • Add an adjective: "The fluffy cat sleeps."
    • Add an adverb: "The fluffy cat sleeps quietly."
    • Add an additional detail: "The fluffy cat sleeps quietly on the warm blanket."
    • Emphasise how each addition makes the sentence more descriptive and interesting.

Guided Practice (5 minutes)

  1. Sentence Strip Activity:
    • Divide students into pairs.
    • Give each pair a sentence strip with a simple sentence (e.g., "The dog barks.").
    • Have them work together to extend their sentence by adding adjectives, adverbs, and extra details.
    • Ask pairs to share their extended sentences with the class.

Independent Practice (5 minutes)

  1. Worksheet Activity:
    • Distribute worksheets with simple sentences that need extending (e.g., "The bird sings.").
    • Instruct students to write their own extensions for each sentence on the sheet.

Review & Conclusion (5 minutes)

  1. Review: Summarise what was learned about extending sentences.
  2. Discussion: Invite a few students to share their work from the worksheet.
  3. Encourage creativity: Remind students that their sentences can be as imaginative as they want!
