Create excitement for learning about shapes by engaging preschoolers in a fun scavenger hunt that incorporates movement and discovery.
Gather the Children
Start by inviting all the children to sit in a circle. Show them the colorful paper cut-outs and ask if they can name the shapes. Let them shout out their answers!
Shape Storytime
Present a brief and engaging story about a friendly shape character (e.g., Sammy the Square or Tilly the Triangle) who loves to play hide and seek. Explain that these shape characters are hiding around the classroom, and it’s their job to find them.
Explain the Task
Tell the children that they will go on a “Shape Scavenger Hunt” to find the shapes around the room. When they find a shape, they should call out its name, show it to their friends, and place it in the basket.
Setting the Music
For added fun, play a lively song as they hunt for shapes, encouraging them to dance and move with excitement. When the music stops, they have to freeze in place and hold up their shapes!
Review Together
Once all the shapes are collected, gather the children back in a circle. Discuss where they found the different shapes and how many of each shape they collected. Great opportunities here for counting and comparison!
Cap off the lesson by singing a simple song about shapes or reading a short picture book related to shapes. This lively introduction will set a positive atmosphere for learning mathematics while allowing the children to explore their environment!
This lesson hook not only introduces preschoolers to basic geometric shapes but also incorporates movement, social interaction, and creativity, making math enjoyable and engaging right from the start!
