Hello class, today we will be analyzing the character of Roger in Lord of the Flies. Our objectives for this lesson are to identify textual evidence to support our analysis and to discuss the significance of Roger's actions in the novel.
Please take out your copies of Lord of the Flies, and turn to Chapter 11. We will be reading relevant passages and then answering questions on the handout provided. Please read silently for the next 10 minutes, and when you have finished, proceed to answer the questions.
Now, I would like you all to divide into small groups and discuss your answers with one another. Please take the next 10 minutes to do so.
Now that you have had a chance to discuss the material with one another, let's have a class discussion. Can anyone share their observations about Roger and his actions in the novel? What questions do you have about his character?
Let's take a few minutes to look up additional information on Roger using the computers in the back of the room. As you are researching, reflect on the significance of his character in the novel.
Before we end the lesson, I will briefly review the homework assignment. Please remember to write a brief essay on the significance of Roger's character in Lord of the Flies, using textual evidence to support your analysis.
That concludes today's lesson. Thank you for participating and have a good evening!
