Lesson Plan: Syllabication Rules to Improve Vocabulary and Spelling

Subject: English

Duration: 30 minutes

Objectives

Materials Needed

Introduction (5 minutes)

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

Syllabication Rules

Introduce the following rules for syllabication:

  1. Every syllable must have a vowel (e.g., "cat" has one syllable; "happy" has two: hap-py).
  2. Divide between compound words (e.g., "basketball" = basket-ball).
  3. Divide before a single consonant that follows a vowel (e.g., "ma-nor").
  4. Two consonants between vowels usually split (e.g., "hap-py").
  5. Don’t separate digraphs (e.g., "sh" and "ch" stay together, so "each" would not be divided as "e-ach").
