Lesson Structure

Step Number Step Title Length (mins) Details
1 Introduction 5 Introduce the concept of multiplication as repeated addition. Discuss its importance in real-life scenarios.
2 Direct Instruction 10 Explain multiplication facts and demonstrate with examples on the whiteboard. Cover multiplication tables from 1 to 12.
3 Printable Card Activity 8 Distribute printable multiplication cards to each student. Instruct them to fill in the cards with relevant multiplication facts.
4 Independent Practice 5 Students complete a few multiplication problems using the cards. Circulate the room to assist as needed.
5 Collection and Random Check 2 Collect the cards. Randomly check them for completion and understanding, providing feedback without formal presentations.
6 Conclusion and Recap 5 Summarize key points from the lesson, reinforce the importance of multiplication, and address any questions. Assign homework.

Homework

Complete a worksheet with multiplication problems to reinforce the day's lesson. Homework will be checked for completion without students presenting their answers in front of the class.

This lesson plan provides a structured approach to introducing the concept of multiplication to Grade 5 students, ensuring engagement and comprehension through various activities.

Lesson script

Lesson Script: Beginning Multiplication

Introduction

"Good morning, class! Today, we are going to start our journey into the world of multiplication. Can anyone tell me what multiplication is? Yes, that’s right! Multiplication is basically repeated addition. For example, if I have two groups of three apples, instead of saying 3 + 3, we can multiply 3 by 2. This makes it a lot easier, doesn’t it? Multiplication is super important in real life too; we use it when shopping, cooking, or even when estimating time. Let’s find out more about this great math tool!"

Direct Instruction

“Now, let’s dive deeper into multiplication facts. We are going to learn the multiplication tables from 1 to 12 today. To start, I’ll write the multiplication table for 2 on the whiteboard. Watch carefully.

If I have 2 times 1, that equals 2. If I have 2 times 2, that equals 4. And if I have 2 times 3, that equals 6. Each time, we are just adding another group of 2!

Let’s quickly go through the first few facts together. What is 3 times 4? Yes, it’s 12! Great job! Now, who can tell me 5 times 5? Right, 25!

Multiplication helps us solve problems much faster, especially as the numbers get larger. We will practice these facts so that you feel confident.”

Printable Card Activity

"Now, it’s time for you to get hands-on with multiplication! I’m passing out some printable multiplication cards. Each card has a blank space for you to fill in multiplication facts.

Take a card and write down the multiplication fact for 2 - start with 2 times 1, then 2 times 2, and go all the way to 2 times 12.

Once you’ve done that, move on to the card for 3, doing the same! Remember, use the multiplication as repeated addition to help you. You have 8 minutes to complete this activity. Go ahead, and I’ll walk around to help if you need me!"

Independent Practice

“Now that you’ve filled in your multiplication cards, it's time for you to practice some multiplication problems independently.

Using the cards you just wrote, choose any multiplication fact, and solve a few problems on your own paper. Think about how multiplication is repeated addition as you work through them.

You have 5 minutes for this practice. I’ll be walking around the room to check in and assist anyone who has questions.”

Collection and Random Check

"Time is up! Please hand your cards to the front. I’ll collect them, and then I’ll pick a few to check for completion.

I will randomly select some cards to look at to see how well you understood the multiplication facts. Remember, this isn’t a test; it’s just to help me understand where we all are with multiplication.”

Conclusion and Recap

“Excellent work today, everyone! Let’s quickly recap what we’ve learned. We started with the idea that multiplication is just repeated addition. We then practiced writing down the multiplication facts for the numbers 1 through 12, and completed some independent practice.

Multiplication is a helpful tool not only in math class but also in everyday life. If you have questions or need further clarification, please feel free to ask!

For homework, I’d like you to complete a worksheet with multiplication problems to reinforce what we worked on today. Remember, I will check your homework for completion, so try your best.

Great job today, class. I’m proud of your effort. See you all tomorrow!”
