Lesson Starter: A Story in a Bag

Objective

To spark creativity and engage students in writing by using an interactive storytelling exercise.

What You'll Need

Introduction (5 minutes)

Start the lesson by holding up the bag and asking the class:

“Have you ever found a mysterious bag of items? What stories might these objects tell?”

Draw attention to the idea that every object carries its own story, which can serve as inspiration for creative writing.

Activity Instructions (15 minutes)

  1. Open the Bag: With the students' excitement piqued, reveal the bag and pull out one item at a time. Show each item and encourage students to share what they think each object could represent in a story.

  2. Group Discussion: After revealing all five items, engage the class in a brief discussion:

    • What do these items have in common?
    • What different scenarios could these items suggest?
    • How do they evoke emotions or memories?
  3. Writing Prompt: Students will now choose one item from the bag (or one that resonates with them), and write a short creative story inspired by that item. They should consider the following:

    • Character: Who is involved, and what is their goal?
    • Setting: Where does the story take place?
    • Conflict: What challenge does the character face?

Conclusion (5 minutes)

Wrap up by encouraging a few volunteers to share their story ideas. This allows students to hear diverse perspectives and prompts further discussion about how different items can lead to different narratives.

Transition to Independent Writing

Tell students that they will be expanding on their ideas today and crafting a full short story based on their chosen item. Encourage them to think about descriptive language and character development as they write, reminding them that every object holds a unique story waiting to be told!

By using a hands-on, visual method in the beginning of the class, you engage students and create a vibrant atmosphere where creativity can flourish, setting the tone for a productive writing lesson.
