Lesson Plan: Construction Theme
Subject: English
Grade Level: Preschool / Nursery
Duration: 30 Minutes
Objective
Students will learn key vocabulary related to construction and practice using these words in simple sentences.
Materials Needed
- Construction toys (blocks, toy trucks, construction worker figurines)
- Chart paper and markers
- Picture cards of construction tools and equipment (e.g., hammer, crane, bulldozer)
- Storybook about construction (e.g., "Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site" by Sherri Duskey Rinker)
- Worksheets with coloring pages of construction scenes
Introduction (5 Minutes)
- Welcome the Students
Begin the lesson with a friendly greeting.
- Introduction to the Theme
Explain that today’s theme is construction. Ask students if they have seen construction sites or if they know what construction workers do. Engage them with a few questions:
- “What do you think we need to build a house?”
- “Have you ever seen a big truck or a machine at a construction site?”
Vocabulary Introduction (10 Minutes)
- Introduce Key Vocabulary
Use picture cards to introduce words related to construction:
- Builder
- Hammer
- Truck
- Crane
- Blocks
- Hard Hat
- Interaction
Show each card and encourage students to repeat the word after you. Ask them to describe what each item is used for or to mimic actions related to each word (e.g., pretend to hammer).
Story Time (5 Minutes)
- Read a Construction-Themed Book
Gather students in a circle and read a short construction-themed story. As you read, ask questions to check comprehension:
- “What do the workers need to build?”
- “Can you point to the crane in the picture?”
- Discuss the Story
After reading, encourage students to share their favorite part or to relate it to their experiences with construction.
Activity: Build and Share (7 Minutes)
- Group Activity
Divide students into small groups and give them construction toys.
- Building Challenge
Ask each group to work together to build something (a house, a tower, etc.).
- Sharing Time
Allow groups to present their construction to the class. Encourage them to use the vocabulary learned (e.g., “We used blocks to build a tall tower!”).
Conclusion & Wrap-Up (3 Minutes)
- Review Key Vocabulary
Quickly review the vocabulary words learned today by showing the picture cards again.
- Closing Remarks
Thank students for their participation and excitement. Encourage them to notice construction in their daily lives.
- Assign Coloring Worksheet
Hand out coloring pages related to construction for students to work on after the lesson to reinforce concepts learned.
Assessment
- Observe students’ participation during the discussion and group activity.
- Listen for the correct use of vocabulary words during presentations.
- Review completed worksheets for understanding and engagement.
Extensions
- For further learning, invite a construction worker to visit the class or take a field trip to a local construction site (if safe and feasible).
- Introduce additional construction vocabulary in subsequent lessons, relating them to different building projects.
