Lesson Plan: Nonsense Word Fluency

Subject: English

Grade: 1

Duration: 30 minutes

Objective

Students will be able to read and decode nonsense words to enhance their phonemic awareness and decoding skills.

Materials Needed

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Begin the lesson by explaining what nonsense words are: living in a world where some words are made up, they can be fun!
  2. Show a couple of examples on the whiteboard (e.g., "glim," "brop," and "zang").
  3. Discuss the importance of being able to decode words, whether real or nonsense, to become better readers.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

  1. Teaching Nonsense Words

    • Introduce a list of nonsense words, pronouncing each clearly.
    • Write the words on the whiteboard as you say them. Include words like:
      • blorp
      • wimpy
      • snaggle
      • plonky
  2. Phonemic Awareness Activity

    • Break down the sounds in each nonsense word. For example:
      • blorp = /b/ + /l/ + /or/ + /p/
    • Engage students to repeat the sounds after you.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

  1. Flashcard Activity

    • Show flashcards with nonsense words at a quick pace and have students read them aloud.
    • Ask students to clap their hands when they hear a sound that they recognize.
  2. Partner Practice

    • Pair students and provide each pair with a set of nonsense word flashcards.
    • Allow them to take turns reading the words to each other.

Independent Practice (5 minutes)

  1. Provide students with a worksheet with a mixture of nonsense words and blank spaces for them to fill in the sounds they hear.
  2. Students will decode and write the correct nonsense word next to the sound breakdown.

Closure (5 minutes)

  1. Review the nonsense words learned during the lesson.
  2. Ask a few students to share their favorite nonsense word and why.
  3. Reinforce that decoding nonsense words helps improve reading skills.

Assessment

Homework

  1. Nonsense Word Challenge:

    • Write 5 nonsense words that you make up.
    • Create a short sentence using one of the nonsense words. For example, "The wimpy florp danced."
  2. Correct Answers for Homework Activity:

    • Example nonsense words could vary; students' own creations accepted.
