To introduce second graders to the concept of division through a fun, relatable story that captures their imagination and helps them understand sharing and grouping.
Gather the students around and set the stage with an engaging story.
Narration:
"Once upon a time in a magical land called Cookieville, there lived a friendly baker named Ms. Bakerella. She was famous for her delicious cookies! One day, Ms. Bakerella decided to throw a big party for all the children in the neighborhood. She baked 24 cookies to share. But Ms. Bakerella wanted to make sure every child got an equal number of cookies.
Now, here’s the magical part! There were 6 children at the party. Ms. Bakerella needed our help to figure out how many cookies each child would get."
Questions to Ask:
Transition:
"Great ideas, everyone! What you just helped us do is called division. Division is like sharing or grouping things equally. When we want to find out how many cookies each child gets, we can divide the total number of cookies by the number of children."
Use a whiteboard or digital display to illustrate the concept. Draw 24 cookies and group them into 6 sets. Show how each group represents a child.
Example:
🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 (1st child)
🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 (2nd child)
🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 (3rd child)
🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 (4th child)
🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 (5th child)
🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 🍪 (6th child)
Wrap Up:
"Now we know that 24 cookies shared among 6 children means that each will receive 4 cookies! Today, we’re going to dive deeper into division to learn more ways we can share and group items equally. Are you ready for our cookie adventure?"
By starting with a relatable story, students become excited and ready to learn about division while associating it with a fun concept of sharing cookies!
