Introduction

"Hello, everyone! Today, we are going to explore something very exciting: reading menus in Spanish! How many of you have been to a restaurant where the menu was in Spanish? (Pause for responses) Great! Knowing how to read a menu can really enhance your dining experience.

First, let’s go over some key vocabulary and phrases that you'll find on menus. Words like 'plato' (dish), 'bebidas' (drinks), and 'postre' (dessert) are essential to understand when ordering food. Can anyone tell me what their favorite dish is in Spanish? (Encourage some responses)

Now, let’s write these words on the board for everyone to see. (Write words on the whiteboard) Remember, these are just a few examples, and there are many more! Are there any questions about these words? (Pause for questions) Excellent! Let’s move on to our group activity."

Group Activity

"I will now divide you into pairs. Each pair will receive a sample menu in Spanish. Your task is to analyze the menu together. Look for different items, and discuss what you like or don't like about them.

Be sure to use Spanish when describing your preferences. For instance, you might say, 'Me gusta la pizza' (I like pizza) or 'No me gusta el pescado' (I don’t like fish).

You will have 15 minutes for this activity. Ready, set, go! (Monitor the pairs, guiding as needed and encouraging the use of Spanish vocabulary)"

Printable Card Activity

"Alright, everyone! I hope you had a great time working with your partner. Now, I will hand out some printable cards. On these cards, I want you to write down your favorite dishes and some ingredients in Spanish.

Think of a dish you really enjoy and describe it! For example, you can write about a taco: 'Me encanta los tacos de pollo con salsa' (I love chicken tacos with salsa).

You will have 15 minutes to complete this activity, so take your time and be creative! Feel free to ask me if you need help. Let's start!" (Circulate and assist students as they fill out their cards)

Class Discussion

"Okay, time is up! Now, let’s come back together as a class. I would like to hear what you discussed in your groups.

Please share one dish from your menu and tell us what you wrote on your card. Use the vocabulary we learned earlier! Who wants to go first? (Encourage students to share and speak in Spanish, providing support as needed)

That was wonderful! It’s inspiring to hear all of your favorite dishes. Let’s spend a couple of minutes reflecting on what we've learned today and how it connects to real-life scenarios."

Collection of Cards

"Now, I am going to collect the cards you filled out. Please hand them in to the front. I might check a few randomly, so make sure you’ve done your best work.

This will help me understand your grasp of the vocabulary we covered. Remember, it's okay if you have questions or need further help learning these words!"

Assign Homework

"Thank you for your great participation today! For homework, I want you to practice what we've learned. Please create a small menu at home, listing 3-5 of your favorite dishes with their ingredients in Spanish.

Try to be creative! You can draw or print pictures of these dishes to go along with your menu. We will revisit these in our next class.

If you have any questions about the homework, feel free to ask! Great job today, everyone! See you next class!"
