Back to School: Creative Kick-off Activity for ESL Students

Objective:

Engage Year 6 ESL students in a fun and interactive way to introduce the topic of "Back to School," fostering language skills and building a sense of community.

Activity Title: "Back to School Survival Kit"

Materials Needed:

Activity Steps:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes):

    • Begin by greeting the students and expressing excitement about the new school year.
    • Ask, "What do you need to survive a busy school year?" Write their ideas on the board as they share.
  2. Discussion (5 minutes):

    • Explain the concept of a "Survival Kit." Discuss how each item can help them be successful in school. Ideas might include pencils, notebooks, snacks, stress balls, etc.
    • Introduce vocabulary related to school supplies and discuss why each item is essential.
  3. Craft Activity (25 minutes):

    • Hand out the empty shoeboxes to each student.
    • Instruct students to decorate their boxes with school supplies and items they brainstormed earlier. Encourage creativity – they can draw, write, or paste images of their items on their boxes.
    • Provide printed prompts for students who may struggle with ideas: “a favorite book,” “a pencil for writing,” “a snack for energy,” etc.
  4. Sharing (15 minutes):

    • Once the boxes are decorated, have students share their "Back to School Survival Kits" with the class.
    • Each student should explain why they chose specific items and how those items will help them this school year.
  5. Closing Activity (5 minutes):

    • Come together as a class to create a "Class Survival Kit" on a large sheet of paper. Include all the ideas shared and brainstorm additional items together.
    • Display this paper in the classroom as a reminder of the teamwork and collaboration that will be important during the school year.

Assessment:

Informally observe student participation during the activity, noting their ability to express ideas in English and engage with peers. Use their contributions to scaffold future lesson plans and vocabulary lessons.

This activity not only engages students in a hands-on craft but also encourages them to practice speaking, listening, and creative thinking—all vital components in an ESL classroom. Plus, it fosters camaraderie as they prepare for the year ahead!
