Lesson Plan: Reading for Grade 4
Objective
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the main idea and supporting details of a text, as well as summarize the content in their own words.
Duration
30 minutes
Materials Needed
- A short fictional story (1-2 pages)
- Whiteboard and markers
- Paper and pencils
- Main Idea and Supporting Details graphic organizer
Standards
This lesson aligns with the following Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.2: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin with a brief discussion about what a main idea is. Ask students:
- "What do you think the main idea of a story is?"
- "Why is it important to know the main idea?"
- Explain that the main idea is what the story is mostly about and that supporting details help to explain or prove that main idea.
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
- Introduce the selected short story and provide a brief summary.
- Read the story aloud to the class, modeling fluency and expression.
- As you read, pause occasionally to ask questions:
- "What do you think is the most important part of this section?"
- "Can anyone identify a detail that supports what just happened?"
- After reading, write the main idea of the story on the whiteboard and ask students to contribute supporting details.
Guided Practice (5 minutes)
- Hand out the Main Idea and Supporting Details graphic organizer.
- As a class, work together to fill out the organizer based on the story.
- Guide students to:
- Identify the main idea and write it in the designated section.
- List supporting details in the corresponding section.
Independent Practice (5 minutes)
- Give students a new, short passage or another story to read independently.
- Instruct them to:
- Identify the main idea.
- List supporting details using the graphic organizer.
- Write a brief summary in their own words.
Closing (5 minutes)
- Invite a few students to share their main ideas and details with the class.
- Summarize key points of the lesson.
- Reinforce the importance of identifying the main idea and supporting details.
- Assign students to read a book of their choice at home and prepare to share the main idea and supporting details in the next class.
Assessment
- Monitor students during independent practice to assess understanding.
- Review completed graphic organizers to evaluate their identification of main ideas and supporting details.
Adjustments
- For advanced learners, provide more complex texts.
- For students who need additional support, pair them with a buddy for the independent reading activity.
