Today, we’re going to embark on an exciting journey back in time to the 1600s and 1700s! Imagine that you’re not just sitting in your classroom, but instead, you’re stepping into a time machine that will take you to the bustling shores of America’s early colonies.
To kick off our adventure, I need your help! I’d like each of you to quickly grab a piece of paper and a pencil. Let’s create a "Time Traveler's Passport"!
Draw Your Passport Cover: On the front, write “Time Traveler's Passport” and decorate it with drawings of things you might see or do in the colonies—maybe a ship, a quill, or a colonial hat!
Inside Your Passport: Write your name and today's date. Then imagine that you are a young colonist, and jot down two things you wonder about what life was like in the colonies.
Once everyone has their Time Traveler's Passport ready, close your eyes for a moment, take a deep breath, and picture yourself in the year 1620. You hear the sound of the waves crashing against the ship's hull as it nears the shore of a new world.
After our brief time in imagination, we’ll come back together. I’d like you to share one of your thoughts about what you imagined.
This exercise will set the stage for our lesson, where we’ll explore the different colonies, their geography, and the brave people who settled there!
With our creative minds warmed up, we’ll dive into the fascinating world of the Thirteen Colonies — the different regions, what life was like, and how these colonies set the stage for America as we know it today!
