Welcome to 9th Grade Math!

Hello, everyone! I’m excited to be your math teacher this year. To kick off our learning journey, I’d like to start with a fun and interactive activity that will help us get to know each other better while also diving into some mathematical thinking!

Activity: Math-Myself Collage

Objective:

To introduce ourselves using math-related elements, fostering a welcoming classroom environment.

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

  1. Create Your Collage: Each student will create a “Math-Myself Collage” on a piece of construction paper. Use the following prompts to guide your creations:

    • My Favorite Number: Choose a number that has special significance to you. It could be your birthday, a lucky number, or a favorite sports player's number. Write it big and bold at the top of your collage!

    • Math Connection: Think of a mathematical concept that relates to your favorite number. For instance, if your favorite number is 7, you could explore concepts like prime numbers, multiples, or the significance of 7 in various cultures.

    • Personal Interests: Include images or drawings representing your hobbies and interests — sports, music, art — whatever you love! Use math to create shapes or patterns that represent these interests. For example, create geometric patterns in the background.

  2. Add Your Name: Be sure to include your name in a creative way on your collage. You can use geometric lettering, or even compose your name using mathematical shapes.

  3. Present Your Collage: Once you finish, you’ll present your collage to the class. Share:

    • Your favorite number and its significance.
    • How it relates to a math concept.
    • A bit about your hobbies and interests.

Reflection:

After everyone presents, we will have a class discussion on the variety of ways math intersects with our lives. This will not only help us learn about each other but also introduce us to the idea that math is everywhere in the world around us!

Let’s make this year a fantastic exploration of numbers and shapes together. I'm looking forward to discovering more about you all and seeing how we can learn math in creative ways!

Ready, set, let’s math it up! 🎉
