Introduction (5 minutes)

Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of main ideas and supporting details.

• Definition of Main Idea: The overall point or message the author is conveying.
• Supporting Details: Facts, examples, or descriptions that back up the main idea.

Ask students to think of a time when they had to explain something to a friend – they likely provided key reasons or details to support their main explanation. Make connections to ensure understanding.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

1. Display a short informational text excerpt on the board or projector.
2. Read the text aloud as a class.
3. Discuss the following:

   • What details do we find that support that main idea?
4. Model filling out the graphic organizer with the main idea and at least three supporting details from the text.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

Provide students with another short informational text excerpt in their handouts. As a class, guide students through identifying the main idea and supporting details. Encourage them to use the graphic organizer to record their thoughts.
