Volleyball: Game On!
Warm-Up Activity: “The Volleyball Relay”
Objective
Kick off the lesson with an engaging and energetic activity that introduces the basic skills of volleyball while fostering teamwork and communication among students.
Materials Needed
- Volleyballs (enough for small groups)
- Cones or markers for boundaries
- Stopwatch or timer
Setup
- Divide the Class: Split students into teams of 4-6 members.
- Establish Relay Stations: Set up two stations for each team about 20 yards apart, using cones to mark boundaries. At one end, place a volleyball.
- Create Skill Challenges: Each station will feature a different challenge that focuses on volleyball skills:
- Set Station: Students practice setting the ball over a cone.
- Serve Station: Students practice serving to specific targets designated by cones.
- Pass Station: Students pass the volleyball back and forth before sprinting to the next station.
Instructions
- Teams will compete in relay-style, where one person from each team completes the challenge at the first station before running to the next one.
- When a player finishes their station, they sprint back to tag the next teammate.
- The team that completes all stations first wins, but all teams should focus on doing the skills correctly and supporting each other.
Discussion Points After the Activity
After the relay, gather the students around for a brief discussion. Ask them the following questions:
- What strategies did your team use to communicate effectively?
- How did teamwork play a role in completing the relay?
- Which skill was the most challenging, and how did you address it?
