To engage young learners in phonics by introducing letter sounds through a creative story-based activity.
Setting the Stage:
Gather the children in a cozy circle on the carpet. Introduce the lesson with excitement:
“Today, we’re going on a special adventure to find the sounds of letters! But first, I have a mystery box. Can you guess what's inside?”
Materials Needed:
Opening the Box:
Slowly open the box and pull out one object at a time. Show it to the class and ask: “What do you think this is? Can you hear the first sound of the word?”
Identifying Sounds:
For example, if you pull out an apple, hold it up high and say: “This is an apple! What sound do we hear at the beginning of 'apple'? That’s right! /a/!”
Interactive Sound Game:
After discussing the first object, ask the children to join in: “Can anyone think of another word that starts with the /a/ sound?”
Allow a few children to share their answers. Repeat this for each object you take out of the box.
Group Activity:
Once all objects are revealed, split the children into small groups. Give each group a few objects or pictures. Ask them to:
Sound Song:
To wrap up the lesson, sing a phonics song together that includes the sounds learned. Use familiar tunes (like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star") to make it easy and fun.
End the lesson by reminding children that every letter has a special sound and that they're all phonics detectives! Share how they can look around their classroom or at home and find objects that start with the different sounds they learned today.
