Tropical Rainforest Biomes
Here are some important facts about tropical rainforests!
What Are Tropical Rainforests?
- Diverse Ecosystems: Tropical rainforests are home to more than 80% of the world's known plants and animals.
- Location: They are mainly found between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, like in places such as the Congo, the Amazon, and Indonesia.
Layers of the Rainforest
- Three Layers: Rainforests have three main layers:
- Understorey: The bottom layer with smaller plants and young trees.
- Canopy: The middle layer made of tall tree tops, 20-30 meters high, that block a lot of sunlight.
- Emergents: The tallest trees that rise above the canopy.
Food from the Rainforest
Many yummy foods come from rainforests!
- Fruits: Bananas, pineapples, oranges, and mangoes.
- Grains: Rice is a big one!
- Nuts: Coconuts, peanuts, and coffee beans.
- Vegetables: Corn, yams, and peppers.
- Spices: Ginger, vanilla, and cinnamon.
Animals as Food
- Some animals, like certain frogs and iguanas, are also eaten. Sadly, they are in danger because people are hunting them too much.
Non-Food Products
Rainforests give us lots of things we need:
- Medicines: Many medicines, including those for cancer and other illnesses, come from rainforest plants.
- Decorative Plants: Plants like orchids and palms are grown for gardens.
Challenges for Rainforests
- Human Activity: Rainforests are being cut down for farming, mining, and building.
- Soil Problems: When trees are cut down, the soil loses important nutrients, making it hard to grow crops.
Why Are Rainforests Special?
- They provide food and medicine and are home to many animals and plants. Taking care of them is super important for our planet!
