Welcome to a New Year of Learning: The Adventure Begins!

Objective

To introduce students to the English language curriculum and foster a sense of community and excitement for the year ahead.

Opening Activity: "The Great Class Map"

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

  1. Create the Class Map:

    • Hang a large piece of paper in a central location in the classroom. This will become our "Great Class Map."
  2. Introduction:

    • Start the lesson by greeting every student with a warm welcome. Explain that while we come from different places, together we will embark on an exciting journey this year.
  3. Reflect on Backgrounds:

    • Ask each student to think about where they come from or something special about their background. This could be their hometown, a favorite place they’ve visited, or even a cultural tradition they cherish.
  4. Share and Write:

    • One by one, invite students to share their reflections with the class. After each sharing, they can write their name and a short fact about themselves on a sticky note.
    • If time allows, students can also illustrate their sticky notes with a small drawing that represents their identity or favorite thing.
  5. Building the Map:

    • As students share, they can place their sticky notes on the "Great Class Map," creating a colorful collage of identities and stories.
    • Using a world map (if available), they can also mark where they or their ancestry comes from, emphasizing the diversity in the classroom.
  6. Class Pledge:

    • After everyone has contributed, gather students in a circle and discuss the importance of community, respect, and collaboration in learning. Together, create a “Class Pledge” that everyone can agree on, focusing on being kind, helpful, and supportive throughout the year.

Conclusion of the Activity:

Transition:

You can then segue into discussing the syllabus, highlighting fun activities planned for the year, and setting expectations for a collaborative and engaging learning environment.

This innovative start will not only help students get to know each other but will also spark excitement as they realize they have different stories to bring to the class—setting the stage for a year of learning together!
