Welcome to a New Year of Learning!

Activity: "The Friendship Web"

Objective:

To help students get to know each other in a fun and engaging way, fostering a supportive classroom environment right from the first day of school.

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes):
Begin by welcoming the class and introducing yourself. Explain that today is all about making new friends and getting to know one another.

  2. Name Tags (10 minutes):
Pass out the name tags and colorful markers. Ask each student to write their name and one fun fact about themselves (like their favorite hobby, animal, or food). Give them a few minutes to complete this.

  3. Create the Web (20 minutes):

    • Have students sit in a circle.
    • Start with the ball of yarn. Hold onto the end of the string and introduce yourself, sharing your name and the fun fact you included on your name tag.
    • After you share, toss the ball of yarn to a classmate across the circle (while holding onto your piece of yarn).
    • That student then shares their name and fun fact, and they will toss the yarn to another person.
    • Continue until everyone has had a chance to speak. By the end, a colorful web will be formed with the yarn connecting everyone together!
  4. Reflect (10 minutes):

    • Once everyone has shared, gather back in the circle with the yarn web visible.
    • Discuss how each strand of yarn represents a connection between classmates. Emphasize the importance of helping and supporting one another throughout the year.
  5. Wrap-up (5 minutes):

    • Thank everyone for participating!
    • Encourage them to keep the strings in mind as they build friendships in the classroom throughout the year.

Closure:

By participating in this activity, students will not only learn the names of their classmates but also create connections that they can rely on as they navigate their school year together.

Let's make this year a fantastic journey of cooperation, learning, and fun!
