To introduce the letter "F" and its sound through an engaging and interactive lesson suitable for Reception/Kindergarten students.
Start by gathering the students in a circle on the carpet. Express your excitement about learning the letter "F" today!
Hold up a colorful, giant letter "F" card. Say, “Today, we’re going to have a fabulous adventure with the letter F! Can anyone tell me what sound the letter F makes?” (Encourage students to make the sound “ffff.”)
Begin a fun call-and-response activity by saying, “F is for…,” and let students respond with words beginning with the letter F (like fish, fruit, frog, etc.). Write these words on a large piece of chart paper titled “Friends of F.”
Explain that you’re going to pretend you’re in a “Fabulous F Parade!” Tell the children each will take a turn to choose an item or animal that starts with the letter F to “march” around the circle. You might say, "When it’s your turn, you can say your word, and everyone will clap and cheer!"
Let the parade begin! As children take turns, reinforce the sound of the letter F by repeating it together. For instance, if a child says “fish,” chant “ff-fish! ff-fish!” together, while they march around the classroom.
After the parade, gather the students back to the carpet. Ask a few children to share their favorite “F” word from the parade. Explain that they’ll be doing more fun activities involving the letter “F” throughout the lesson.
Conclude the introduction by saying, “Today is a fabulous day to learn about the letter F. Let’s see what more fun we can have with it!”
Now you're ready to lead them into the next parts of your lesson, such as phonetic games, crafting activities related to the letter "F," or storytime featuring characters and animals that begin with that letter!
