Creative Lesson Introduction: Understanding Author’s Purpose
Objective
Today we're going to dive into the intriguing world of Author's Purpose. By the end of the lesson, you’ll be able to identify whether an author is writing to inform, entertain, or persuade.
“Mystery Box Challenge” Introduction Activity
What You’ll Need:
- A box (or a bag) that can’t be seen into
- 3-4 different objects (a pen, a toy, a book, a snack, etc.)
- A whiteboard and markers
- Sticky notes and pens for each student
The Activity:
-
Mystery Box Reveal:
- Begin by showing the class the sealed box but don’t let them see what’s inside.
- Tell them that you have a few items inside that represent different types of writing purposes.
-
Class Predictions:
- Ask students to think about what might be inside the box.
- Invite them to write down their predictions on sticky notes, labeling whether they think each item “Informs,” “Entertains,” or “Persuades.”
- Allow a couple of minutes for discussion in pairs before sharing.
-
Mystery Unveiling:
- One by one, pull out each item from the box and discuss its potential author’s purpose:
- If it’s a pen: "This could be used in an informational text or a persuasive essay!"
- If it’s a toy: "This likely entertains! We read stories to be entertained!"
- If it’s a snack: "You might create a commercial, persuading people to buy it!"
-
Discussion:
- After revealing each item, encourage students to share why they think each represents a particular author's purpose.
- Note their thoughts on the whiteboard under the corresponding categories: Inform, Entertain, Persuade.
-
Transition to Lesson:
- Conclude by explaining that, just like the items in the box, all authors have reasons behind their writing, and understanding these reasons will enhance our reading skills.
- Mention that today, we will learn about how to identify and analyze an author’s purpose in different texts.
Conclusion
This engaging introduction not only piques interest through a fun mystery but ties everyday objects to our deeper understanding of writing, making the concept of author’s purpose relatable and easier to grasp! Let's get started!
