Objective

The Billion Dollar Challenge
Setting the Scene
Start the lesson by turning your classroom into a bank, where each student is a banker dealing with large amounts of money. Explain that today, they will be learning about place value by handling some "billion-dollar" bills.
Activity Steps

Prop Preparation
- Create large “billion-dollar” bills made out of colorful paper (or print them out) with the value '1,000,000,000' on each.
- Make smaller bills representing different place values, such as '1,000', '100', '10', and '1'.

Introduction to the Theme
- Gather the students and distribute one “billion-dollar” bill to each of them.
- Inform them that they are each going to play the role of a banker who must divide their billions into various place values.

The Challenge
- Ask them: “If you had to split your billion dollars into different denominations, how would you represent this value in terms of thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones?"
- Encourage them to think about how many of each smaller bill they would need to make up their one billion dollars.

- After a few minutes, invite students to discuss in pairs how they would split their bill. Encourage them to write out their findings. For example, "1,000,000,000 can be made by using 1,000 of the '1,000,000' bills, or 10,000 '100,000' bills, etc."
- Use a whiteboard to visualize these combinations as they share.

- Transition into the main lesson by explaining that each digit in a number has a place that tells us its value.
