• Born in 1912 in London, England
• Attended Sherborne School and later King’s College, Cambridge
• Developed an interest in mathematics at a young age

Cryptography Work

• Began working for the British government in 1939 at the outbreak of WWII
• Worked at Bletchley Park, a codebreaking center
• Helped create the Bombe, a machine that decrypted messages encrypted by the German Enigma machine

The Turing Test

• Proposed in 1950 as a way to test a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human
• Consists of a human evaluator asking questions of two hidden entities - one human and one machine - and determining which is which based solely on their answers

Computer Science Contributions

• Created the Universal Turing Machine, a theoretical machine that could carry out all possible computations
• Published “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” in 1950, which discussed artificial intelligence and the Turing Test
• Considered one of the founders of computer science

Persecution and Death

• Convicted of homosexuality in 1952 (at the time illegal in the UK)
• Sentenced to chemical castration
• Committed suicide in 1954 at the age of 41
