Homework Check

"Good morning, class! Before we start our lesson today, I would like to check your homework from our last session. Please take out your homework and pass it to the front of the classroom. As I collect your papers, I will look through them and give you some feedback. Remember, I won’t be asking anyone to present, so relax and just focus on your work!"

Introduction to Food Pyramid

"Thank you for passing your homework! Now, let’s get started with today’s topic: the Food Pyramid! Can anyone tell me what a food pyramid is? (Pause for responses). Great! The food pyramid is a visual guide that shows us how to eat healthily.

Let’s take a look at this poster/image (hold up visual aid of the food pyramid). As you can see, the pyramid has different levels. The bottom level includes grains like bread and rice, which we should eat most of. The next level has fruits and vegetables, which are also very important. The top of the pyramid includes fats and sweets, which we should only have a little bit of.

Now, who can tell me why it’s necessary to eat a balanced diet? (Wait for answers). Exactly! Eating a balance of different foods helps us to grow strong and stay healthy!"

Group Activity

"Now that we understand the food pyramid, let’s put our knowledge into action! I am going to divide you into small groups. Each group will receive a set of food items. Your task is to discuss and decide together which foods are healthy and which ones are unhealthy.

You have 10 minutes! When you have made your decisions, I want each group to write down the names of the healthy foods on one side, and the unhealthy foods on the other side. Remember, work as a team and share your ideas with each other!"

(After 10 minutes) "Okay, everyone! Let’s wrap up and see what you have come up with."

Physical Activity Break

"Fantastic work, teams! Now let’s get our bodies moving with a quick physical activity! We’re going to play a short game of 'Freeze Dance.' When the music plays, dance around. But when the music stops, you must freeze! Ready? Let’s go!"

(Play music and engage students in the game for about 5 minutes).

Printable Card Activity

"That was a lot of fun! Now it’s time to get back to our lesson. I’m going to hand out some printable cards. On these cards, you’ll see different categories of food. Your job is to write down examples of foods that fit into each category.

Take a few minutes to fill these out. If you need help, feel free to ask your neighbors!"

(Distribute cards and allow 5 minutes for filling them out).

Class Discussion

"Time is up! Now let’s discuss what you wrote on your cards. Can anyone share an example of a healthy food from their card? (Encourage responses). That’s great! And what about unhealthy foods? (Encourage responses).

Let’s talk about how these food choices affect our health. Why do you think some foods are better for us than others? (Facilitate discussion). Excellent points, everyone! It’s really important to think about what we are eating."

Collect and Check Cards

"Now, I would like you to pass your cards to the front so I can take a look at them. I may randomly call on some of you to share your examples. I want to see who identified the most healthy and unhealthy foods!"

(Collect and check cards as students pass them forward).

Assign Homework

"Great job today, everyone! For your homework, I would like you to think about the food choices you make at home. You will write down one healthy food and one unhealthy food that you see or eat at home.

Bring your homework back, and we’ll discuss it in our next lesson. Remember, healthy choices lead to a strong and happy body, so think carefully! Can’t wait to hear what you discover! Have a wonderful day!"

Correct answers

  1. The purpose of the food pyramid is to provide a visual guide for healthy eating; it shows how to eat a balanced diet by depicting the proportions of different food groups.
  2. The four main levels of the food pyramid are:
    • Grains: e.g., bread, rice
    • Fruits: e.g., apples, oranges

  4. Healthy foods are often described as being high in nutrients, low in added sugars and fats, while unhealthy foods are high in calories, sugars, and unhealthy fats with limited nutritional value.
  5. Physical benefits of participating in activities like "Freeze Dance" include improving cardiovascular health and enhancing coordination and balance.
  6. One food item listed under "grains" could be oatmeal; it is considered a healthy choice because it is high in fiber and can help with digestion and maintaining energy levels.

Physical break

Let's stretch our arms up high,
And reach for the clouds in the sky.
Now let’s twist our bodies side to side,
Feel the movement, take it in stride.

Next we’ll march in place with glee,
Lift your knees as high as can be!
Jumping jacks, let’s go, one, two, three,
Clap those hands and move with me!

Now let’s crouch down low and hold,
Pretend we’re tiny, brave, and bold.
Then spring up high like a bouncing ball,
Let’s hear you shout, let’s give it our all!

Time to wiggle like a snake on the floor,
And when I say freeze, stand still—don’t move anymore!
With our bodies warmed and spirits bright,
Let’s get back to learning, feeling just right!
