Exciting Introduction to Tenses

Lesson Hook: Time Travelers in English!

Objective:

Today, we're going to embark on an adventurous journey through time by exploring tenses! Get ready to become time travelers in the English language!

Setting the Scene: A Mysterious Letter

Imagine that one day you find a strange, dusty letter hidden in an old book at the library. The letter is from a mysterious character named Professor Tense, who claims to have invented a time machine that can take us to the past, present, and future!

To activate the time machine, we need to understand how to speak in those different times—using the right tenses!

Engagement Activity: Unlock the Time Machine

  1. Read the Letter:

    • Distribute copies of the letter from Professor Tense to each student. The letter explains how tenses work and asks for help in unlocking the time machine.
    • Sample excerpt from the letter:

      "Dear Future English Scholars,

I need your help to unlock the secrets of my time machine! There are three keys: Past, Present, and Future Tenses. To activate the machine, you must learn how to describe actions that have happened, are happening, and will happen! Can you help me?

      Sincerely, Professor Tense"

  2. Group Discussion:

    • In small groups, students discuss what "past," "present," and "future" mean to them.
    • Encourage them to think of examples from their own lives that fit into these categories.
  3. Unlocking the Tenses:

    • After the discussion, explain that this lesson will help them find the three keys (verbs in the past, present, and future tenses) needed to activate the time machine!

Transition Into the Lesson:

Now that we've set the stage with our mysterious letter and we're excited about our journey, let's dive deeper into our first key—the Present Tense—and discover how it will help us in our time-traveling adventure.

Are you ready to start our quest? Let’s go!
