All About Me: A Fun Introduction to Mathematics

Objective

To engage preschool children in mathematics through personal exploration, focusing on counting, shapes, and comparisons.

Materials Needed

Lesson Introduction

Welcome to Our Special Day!

Teacher’s Greeting: "Good morning, everyone! Today, we are going to start an exciting adventure all about YOU! Can anyone tell me what they see when they look in the mirror? That’s right! They see themselves! Today, we will learn about numbers and shapes by talking about our own unique selves!"

Circle Time Activity

  1. Getting to Know You

    • Gather the children in a circle and prompt them with questions like “What is your name?” and “How old are you?”
    • As each child responds, write their name and age on a large poster board.
  2. Exploring Shapes

    • Show the children a large mirror and ask them to find shapes on their face or outfit. For example, “Do you have a circle nose? A triangle shirt? Let’s count the circles we see together!”
    • Encourage them to point out different shapes they observe, building their vocabulary and interest in geometry.
  3. Count Me!

    • Have the children use construction paper to create a simple ‘All About Me’ poster. They can include:
      • Their name (written by the teacher if needed)
      • Their age (using a number sticker)
      • A drawing of themselves with different shapes (for example, a round face, rectangular body)
    • As they work, walk around and encourage counting the shapes together: “How many circles did you use? Can we count them?”

Wrap-Up

Conclude the lesson by gathering around the poster board. Let each child share their 'All About Me' poster and count together how many children are in the class today, reinforcing counting skills while celebrating their individuality.

Closing Thought: "Remember, just like our unique shapes and numbers, you all bring something special to our class! Mathematics helps us see and share that specialness!"

By incorporating personal identity into the lesson, children not only learn about math concepts like counting and shapes but also gain confidence in discussing who they are. This creative approach keeps them engaged and fosters a positive learning environment!
