Introduction to Colours with the Colour Monster

Objective:

To engage Reception/Kindergarten students in learning about emotions and colours through a fun and interactive story.

Materials Needed:

Lesson Introduction:

1. Set the Scene:

Gather the children on soft cushions in a circle. Begin with a welcoming smile and say:

"Hello, everyone! Today, we’re going to meet a very special friend who is made up of colours and emotions. Have you ever felt happy, sad, or angry? Well, our friend, the Colour Monster, feels all those emotions too — and he shows them in his colours!"

2. Introducing the Colour Monster:

Hold up the Colour Monster poster for all the children to see.

"Look at this jolly creature! This is the Colour Monster. He has a big heart and lots of colourful feelings! Sometimes he feels blue like the ocean when he’s sad, or red like a fire truck when he’s angry. What colour do you think happiness is?"

(Pause for responses and encourage children to share their thoughts.)

3. Interactive Emotion Game:

Now, let’s play a game to help Colour Monster sort his feelings!

"I have these special cards with different emotions. When I hold up a card, if you think it’s a happy emotion, raise your hand and shout out ‘Happy!’ If it’s something else, just make a silly face. Let’s see which colours our Colour Monster might have today!"

(Display the emotion cards one by one, allowing children to respond with excitement and laughter.)

4. Transition to Story Time:

"Now that we know more about the Colour Monster and his feelings, let’s read a story together to see what happens when he mixes up all his colours! Ready? Let’s go on a colourful adventure!"

Conclusion:

Reiterate the excitement of learning about colours and emotions, which not only helps understand feelings but also fosters empathy and kindness.

Follow-up Activity:

After the story, encourage the children to draw their Colour Monster, using the crayons to express how they feel today. Display their wonderful creations on the wall to celebrate their colourful expressions!

This engaging start sets a joyful tone for exploring colours and emotions while fostering a sense of community and understanding among the children.
