Objective:
Students will understand the concept of place value and how it affects the value of digits in a two-digit number.
Materials Needed:
Greet the Class:
Begin with an enthusiastic hello! Say, "Hello, Math Explorers! Today, we’re going on an adventure to uncover the secrets of Place Value!"
Introduce the Mystery Box:
Show the decorated mystery box and say, “This is our Place Value Mystery Box! Inside, I have special number cards that hold hidden treasures. But, to open the box, we need to solve a riddle!”
The Riddle:
Tell the students, “I am a number that can stand alone, but when you place me next to another, I change my tone. What am I?”
(Pause for responses, then share that the answer is a digit!)
Exploring the Digits:
Open the box to reveal the number cards. Explain, “These are our digits from 0 to 9. Today, we will learn how each digit's place can change its value!”
Interactive Place Value Chart:
Create a large place value chart on the board (with columns for Tens and Ones). Invite students to come up and place the number cards into the correct columns to create numbers. For example, use cards to create the number 23 (2 in the Tens place and 3 in the Ones place).
Conclude the opening with, “Now that we’ve unlocked the mystery of what makes a digit special, let’s dive deeper into the world of Place Value and see how we can build more amazing numbers!”
With this creative introduction, students are engaged and ready to explore place value concepts more thoroughly, preparing them to understand how numbers are built and valued based on their positions.
