Community Building: Lesson 1 – Let's Be Neighbours!

Introduction: A Story to Spark Our Imagination

Good morning, everyone! 😊 Today, as we start our journey into community building, I have a delightful story to share with you. This is a story about a little town called Maplewood, where everyone knew each other's name, and they worked together to help one another.

Story Time: The Maplewood Adventure

Once upon a time in the charming town of Maplewood, there lived a girl named Ella. Ella loved to play in the park and ride her bike around the town, but she often felt lonely because she didn’t know many of her neighbours. One sunny Saturday, Ella decided to take matters into her own hands.

She thought, “What if I organized a neighbourhood picnic?” So, she wrote little invitations and decorated them with sparkly stickers. Ella delivered each invitation to her neighbours. The big day arrived, and everyone brought their favourite snacks, games, and stories to share.

At the picnic, Ella learned the names of her neighbours: Mr. Thompson, the friendly baker; Mrs. Lee, who made the best dumplings; and even Charlie, the dog who could do tricks! They laughed, played games, and shared delicious food together. By the end of the day, Ella no longer felt lonely; she was surrounded by friends who cared about one another.

Discussion: What Did Ella Do Right?

Now that you’ve heard Ella’s story, let’s discuss:

Activity: Create Your Own Community Map!

What You Will Do:

  1. Draw a simple map of your community.

    • Include your home, your school, and any nearby parks or places where you like to play.
    • Use symbols and colours to represent different places.
  2. Add your neighbours!

    • Draw little houses or write names next to where your friends or neighbours live.
    • Think about how you could connect with them, just like Ella did.

Closing Thoughts:

By the end of our lesson today, remember: Building a community takes effort, kindness, and a sprinkle of fun! Just like Ella, we can all play a role in making our neighbourhood a caring and fun place to live.

Get ready for our next lesson, where we will dive deeper into what makes a community strong!

Homework:

For tonight, think about one thing you could do to get to know your neighbours better. Be prepared to share your idea in our next class!

Let’s make Maplewood, or any town, an even better place to live together! 🏡💖
