Lesson script

Introduction

"Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to focus on something very important: emotional wellness and understanding our identities. This lesson will help you recognize and express your emotions, identify your values and strengths, and learn how to respect others while building relationships in a new group. Emotional wellness plays a crucial role in how we interact with ourselves and the world around us."

Printable Card Activity

"Now, I have some emotion cards for each of you. Please take one and think about an emotion that you have felt recently. On the card, write down a specific emotion that you recognize in yourself. Don't worry; there are no right or wrong answers. Once you've filled out your card, hold on to it for a little while. I'm going to give you about 15 minutes to do this."

Timer starts for 15 minutes.

"Okay, time's up! If you haven't finished writing yet, please do so in the next minute."

Group Discussion

"Now, I’d like you to form small groups of 4 to 5 students. In your groups, take turns sharing the emotions you wrote on your cards and discuss why you chose them. Think about experiences that connect to these emotions and how they affect you and those around you. I will give you 20 minutes for this discussion."

Allow students to discuss for 20 minutes.

"Alright, let's come back together. I hope you had some meaningful conversations!"

Reflection Activity

"I’m going to collect your emotion cards now. As I gather them, I’ll randomly read a few entries aloud. Listen carefully, as I will invite some of you to share your thoughts and experiences related to the emotions discussed. Remember, the aim of this activity is to reflect on different feelings in our lives and how we can support one another."

Collect emotion cards and read a few entries. Facilitate group reflections for 5 minutes.

Homework Assignment

"For your homework this week, I want you to reflect on what you’ve learned about your emotions, your values, and how they play into your daily life. I’d like you to write a short essay—about a page long—where you describe a significant emotional experience and what it taught you about yourself. Make sure to bring this essay back next class. Any questions about the assignment?”

Pause for questions.

"Great! Let’s move on."

Closure

"To wrap things up today, let’s summarize what we've learned. We discussed the importance of recognizing and expressing our emotions, understanding our personal values and strengths, and respecting one another as we build new relationships. Remember, there are many resources available if you want to delve deeper into emotional wellness—like ReThink, GoZen, and MindUp."

"Thank you for your participation, everyone! I look forward to hearing about your essays next class. Have a great day!"
